MIKE NORTHEY RETIRES FROM PROFESSIONAL CYCLING

RIDER REVEALS HEART VIRUS FORCED HIM TO END RIDING CAREER

Madison Genesis rider Mike Northey has announced his retirement from professional cycling, following a virus which has caused him to suffer permanent heart damage.

Madison Genesis rider Mike Northey has announced his retirement from professional cycling, following a virus which has caused him to suffer permanent heart damage.

Northey announced the news on his personal Instagram page, accompanied by a collage of images of his best memories from his time as a professional.

Coming to terms with the news, Northey wrote of his feelings:

“Everything has to come to an end, sadly for me not the way I envisaged it. For those that don’t know, last year I suffered from a virus which got into my heart and unfortunately I found out too late. After further tests they have found I have suffered permanent damage which has put an end to my career as a professional cyclist.

“There are so many great people who have helped me along the way, I figured this would be the easiest way to let you all know.

“Most of all I’d like to thank Kellie, Roger and everyone involved at Madison Genesis for their support. You guys are truly amazing. The best team I have ever ridden for. Gutted to say the least, but life goes on.”

Mike remains very much a part of the Madison Genesis family and we will race at the Tour de Yorkshire with memories of his attacking, aggressive style of riding at the forefront of our minds.
