Tom Stewart headed Madison Genesis’ final display at the 2016 Tour of Britain, as Erick Rowsell stayed safe to ensure 15th place on general classification – the team’s best ever overall result at the event.
Ensuring breakaway representation for the team on a fifth occasion at the eight-day race, Stewart was part of a classy quartet that led proceedings around London for 100-kilometres.
Joined by Taylor Phinney (BMC), Gabriel Cullaigh (Great Britain) and Jesper Bovenhuis (AnPost), they gained a maximum advantage of a little over one minute, as the peloton remained primed to ride for a bunch finish.
An attacking Stewart, who on three occasions tried to delay the inevitable, was caught with five kilometres remaining, as the peloton lined up for a grandstand finish in London.
Meanwhile, ensconced in the group was Erick Rowsell who completed the day to finish 15th on general classification – the team’s best ever result at the Tour of Britain.
